While the Philippines does not experience the intense cold of the winter months in other parts of the world, the cooler months often referred to as the "ber" months, still take a toll on our health and well-being. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers valuable insights into how to navigate this season and maintain balance and harmony within our bodies.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is linked to the Water element and the Kidney and Bladder organs. This season is ideal for introspection, rest, and renewal. As the outside environment turns colder and drier, our bodies often lose heat and moisture. To balance this, it's important to engage in practices that cultivate our internal warmth and safeguard our essential energy.
Dress Warmly: While it may not be necessary to bundle up in layers, wearing a shawl or a turtleneck can help protect your neck and chest from the cooler air, especially during the early mornings and late evenings.
Nourish with Warmth: Incorporate warming foods into your diet. Think hearty soups, and root vegetables like potatoes and carrots. These foods help to generate internal heat and support digestion. Black beans, kidney beans, walnuts, dark leafy greens and black sesame seeds are foods that specifically nourish the kidneys. Incorporate warming herbs like ginger, garlic, and onions into your meals.
Practice Mindfulness: Engage in calming activities like meditation, yoga, or tai chi. These practices help to quiet the mind, reduce stress, and promote a sense of balance.
Seek Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be a valuable tool for balancing the body's energy flow, especially during the winter months. It can help alleviate symptoms of cold and flu, boost immunity, and promote overall well-being.
Balancing Wei Chi: Harmonizing with the Season
Wei Chi, or protective energy, is an essential concept in TCM. During winter, it's important to strengthen Wei Chi to protect ourselves from external pathogens. By following these tips, you can maintain balance and harmony:
Prioritize Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for restoring and rejuvenating the body. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.
Stay Hydrated: While it may not seem as necessary in cooler weather, staying hydrated is essential for optimal health. Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day.
Limit Cold Drinks and Ice Cream: Cold foods and drinks can weaken the digestive system, so it's best to limit their consumption during the winter months.
Connect with Nature: Spend time outdoors, even if it's just a short walk in the park or a moment in your garden. Connecting with nature can help ground you and promote a sense of well-being.
Even though the Philippines may not experience a traditional winter, we can still honor the season's energy by incorporating these practices into our daily lives. Understanding the principles of TCM and taking simple steps to protect ourselves from the cold and dampness, we can maintain our health and vitality throughout the year.
