The Christmas period is a time of joy and cheer but can often be a source of stress. Between family get-togethers, holiday parties, and gift shopping, it is all too easy to succumb. However, do not allow stress to dim your holiday light.

Why Stress Can Be Harmful

Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, making a person more prone to be ill. It can also lead to a number of other physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and heart disease.

Tips to Manage Holiday Stress

Set Realistic Expectations:

  1. Define: Decide what is honestly important to you, whether family time or volunteer service.

  2. Simplify: Don't let the pursuit of perfection stress you out. Embrace the imperfections of the season and focus on what truly matters

Set Boundaries:

  1. Say No: Don't overcommit yourself.

  2. Delegate: Ask for help from others in your family.

  3. Take breaks: Make sure to take short breaks here and there.

Practice Self-Care:

  1. Eat a Variety of Foods: Focus on a balanced diet that should include mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, and unharried grains.

  2. Sleep: Try to get 7-8 hours of good sleep each night.

  3. Mindfulness: Meditation and deep breathing techniques will help to calm your mind. (To learn meditation: Meditation | Science of Identity Foundation)

  4. Exercise: Include some sort of exercise workout in your routine. Yoga has proven to be beneficial in relaxing your mind and body.

  5. Connect with Others: Spend time with your loved ones and reach out to friends and family for support.

Seek Help from Your Professional:

  1. Therapeutic Consideration: Consult a therapist when you need to relearn coping skills.

  2. Acupuncture and Massage: These therapies can help relax mind, body, and emotions.

With this list at your fingertips, you should be well on your way to having a greater ease in getting through the holiday season for a happier and healthier holiday. It is okay to ask for help and to take care of yourself.
