Neck and shoulder pain are rising complaints in this time of sedentary life. Many hours spent bent over a computer or smartphone have made this clichéd complaint our way of life. While classical medicine is, for the most part, akin to treating symptoms, traditional Chinese medicine examines the holistic approach to solving the real issue.
Acupuncture, the Most Holistic Approach to Neck Pain

Needling is the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the human body to stimulate energy flow. As an ancient practice, it has been utilized for thousands of years to treat varying medical conditions, neck pain being among them.
How Does Acupuncture Help Neck Pain?
Relaxation and Pain Relief: Acupuncture relaxes tense muscles and reduces the perception of pain.
Improved Blood Circulation: Acupuncture enhances blood flow to affected areas through stimulation of certain points, further promoting healing and tissue regeneration, hence reducing inflammation.
Balancing Qi: Qi, or life energy, runs through meridians or channels within the body. In TCM, it is believed that acupuncture balances the Qi, reducing pain and improving overall well-being.
Common Acupuncture Points for Neck Pain
Large Intestine 4 (LI4): Located between the base of the thumb and index finger. It is the most powerful acupoint for relieving pain and inflammation.
Gallbladder 21 (GB21): Located at the top of the shoulder, near the base of the neck, effective for alleviating neck and shoulder tension.
Feng Chi (GB20): Located at the base of the skull, on either side of the spine, is used to relieve headaches, neck pain, and dizziness.
San Jiao 3 (SJ3): Found on the back of the hand, between the ring and little fingers, this point can help reduce stress and tension, which can contribute to neck pain.
Additional TCM Therapies for Neck Pain
Cupping: Heated cups are placed on the skin to create suction, relieving muscle tension by promoting blood flow.
Ear Seeds: Small seeds are placed on specific points on the ear to stimulate acupuncture points and alleviate pain.
Consider including acupuncture in your treatment for neck pain. Not only will this give you immediate relief, but it will also last long by treating the root cause of your pain and restoring a quality life.
Remember to confer with your acupuncture practitioner regarding your case so that an individually tailored treatment plan can be made for you.
